How many things do you have on your plate today? How many tasks are on your to-do list? How many projects are sitting on your laptop waiting to be attended to? How many books are you halfway through reading?
In the last article, I wrote about how I found myself with an unlimited amount of time and although it’s something I had always desired, it didn’t do what I expected it to.
If you haven’t read that article, you can find it here.
For a while now, I’ve been reflecting back on the big WHY of the behavior I exhibited during those couple of years, and in retrospect, it’s become clear that it couldn’t have been any other way. Here is why.

- I was in the process of writing a book for new immigrants to America.
- I was halfway through writing another book about my experience in a fundamental religious cult.
- I was studying (or attempting to learn) French, Spanish, and Arabic on Duolingo.
- I was spending a lot of time thinking a planning a new future career as a restauranteur.
- I was building my own blog because I thought that’s what I wanted to do become before I discovered a better way to share content online (*hint, hint).
- I was 100 or so pages in, in 5 or more books, and a few more just sitting in my Kindle waiting for me to get to them.
And that’s just a short list of all the things that were occupying my mind daily.
You can see where this is going. I was All-Over-The-Damn-Place. No focus whatsoever.
In other words, my brain looked like this…
I had so many things going on in my head that I couldn’t pick which to do first.
Whenever I sat down to work on one of those projects, FOMO would set in and I’d start wondering if I’m focusing on the wrong thing.
Usually, the answer was always yes. I always found a reason why the other thing was better, easier, or faster to…
